Where do I start?
Even though the beginning of a journey can be filled with inspiration and enthusiasm, integrating something new into your own life often means encountering inner and outer resistance.
In terms of starting mindfulness meditation I recommend starting in a small and manageable way. There are quite a few books available in English that can be found online under the keywords "mindfulness meditation books.” There are also various apps for smartphone or tablet, which can be used as an introduction. Guided meditations are very helpful here, as they provide a structure that you can lean on as you get started.
It is a good idea to attend a beginner's course with an experienced teacher.

In German-speaking countries, a wide variety of providers offer MBSR courses under the keywords "mindfulness-based stress reduction.” These provide a good overview and insight into meditation practice over a period of eight weeks. In addition, there are various institutions which deal with different orientations of Buddhism and it is often possible to get an introduction to meditation through these institutions. If you want to try beginning a regular meditation practice, there are several things I can recommend: Short periods of time At the very beginning, even two minutes of meditation can be enough to start with. Many people today are not used to being alone and being quiet with themselves. It is important to approach this slowly and to ease into it. A meditation routine If possible, it is best to regularly practice at a certain time in a certain place. Think of it like the daily routine of brushing your teeth – the time and place does not change much for this routine practice either. :-) Without stress As you begin to practice, don’t stress yourself with trying to achieve a specific goal. The time that you spend with yourself during meditation is time that you are giving yourself – and gifts are meant to be enjoyed. Think of it as a small time-out from your often-hectic daily life. Openness There is no wrong way to get started, and don’t be surprised or disappointed if it does not always come easily. The most important thing is to remain open to experiencing what you feel in any given moment. Patience Would you be able to go on tour as a concert pianist after your first two piano lessons? It’s more likely that you would need to keep practicing, a little every day and checking for yourself whether you notice any changes. Mindfulness meditation is much the same, be patient, practice a little every day, and check in with yourself about any changes in your experience or your behavior. |
